School Resource

The School Resource Officer is a sworn law enforcement officer with the Blood Tribe Police Service who operates in partnership with the Kainai Board of Education. The School Resource Officer Program is still recognized as one of the first community-based initiatives undertaken by the Blood Tribe Police Service - it is community policing in its purist form. A School Resource Officer generally possesses a background in working with youth and community-based programs. The program is committed to fostering partnerships among law enforcement, the school and the community.

Blood Tribe Police Service School Resource Officer Mission Statement:

The Blood Tribe Police Service has dedicated the School Resource Officer to ensure a safer learning environment, to provide valuable assistance to school counselors, teachers, and students, to help prevent and solve problems within the Kainai Board of Education, and to foster a positive relationship between youth and police officers, while respecting the ways of the Kainaiwa people.

The School Resource Officer’s Role:

While maintaining the guided principles of Kainaiyssini, the SRO will provide a uniformed, community based, visible presence within the school community, to protect the safety and wellbeing of students, staff, parents and the community the school serves. The three key roles of the BTPS SRO are crime prevention and law related education, intervention and enforcement.

1. Crime prevention and law related education:

The SRO will have the ability to provide crime prevention education for the following topics:

• Alcohol Misuse
• Babysitter Safety
• Bullying.
• Cannabis
• Cyber Safety.
• Driving and the Law
• Drug Misuse
• Fentanyl
• Home Alone Safety
• Human Trafficking
• Impaired Driving (Drug & Alcohol)
• Kids in the Know Program
• Mental Health
• Methamphetamine
• School Lockdowns
• Science (Police Forensics)
• Sexual Consent
• Unhealthy Relationships/Dating
• Violence
• Vapping/Tobacco & Cigarettes
• Youth Gangs

2.Intervention:

The SRO is a valuable community asset as they develop a positive

perception of the police, protect youth that are vulnerable to victimization and bullying, serve as a role model/mentor to increase students developmental assets, create beneficial referrals to community programs, and promote health and well-being to children and youth.

3. Enforcement:

The SRO will enforce the Criminal Code, the Youth Criminal Justice Act and all other federal, provincial and municipal legislation and related regulations.
